If you are planning on hitting the roads this weekend, make sure you check your route before travelling.

Many roads across central London and Westminster will be closed to facilitate New Year's Eve and New Year's Day celebrations, with some continuing roadworks closing other roads across west London.

Here is our guide on where to avoid when heading out in your car this weekend.

New Year's Eve celebrations

Westminster/Central London

A number of roads will be closed on New Year's Eve

On Saturday, December 31, many roads throughout the centre of London will be closed to facilitate the New Year's Eve fireworks on the River Thames.

Extensive closures will be implemented to allow for large numbers of pedestrians to gather for the fireworks in central London.

The following roads will be closed:

From 12pm:

  • The footway of Victoria Embankment between Westminster Bridge and Northumberland Avenue.

From 2pm:

  • Parliament Square, Whitehall, and Millbank between Parliament Square and Lambeth Bridge.
  • Westminster Bridge and Victoria Embankment between Southwark Bridge and Bridge Street.

From 5pm:

  • Numerous closures around Chichley Street and Belvedere Road on the South Side of the river.

From 8pm, numerous routes will be closed from the following roads. leading to the fireworks on the river.

  • Vauxhall Bridge Road.
  • London Bridge.
  • Oxford Street.
  • Elephant and Castle.

Further closures may be implemented between Tower Bridge and Southwark Bridge on both sides of the river depending on the number of pedestrians.

There could also be traffic control on Vauxhall bridge in the run up to Big Ben's midnight chime.

Once people have left the area and a cleanup operation is complete, closures will be lifted.

The advice is to use public transport, and TfL services will be free to use between 11.45pm and 4.30am on New Year's Eve and into New Year's Day.

New Year's Day Parade

Central London/Westminster

Roads will be closed to facilitate the New Year's Day Parade

On Sunday, January 1, a number of roads in Westminster will be closed to make way for the annual New Year's Day Parade.

Motorists should be aware of large numbers of pedestrians in the area.

All road closures will come into force from 4am to allow for crowds to gather for the 8am parade.

The following roads will be closed to facilitate the parade:

  • Piccadilly (eastbound).
  • Piccadilly Circus.
  • Regent Street.
  • Waterloo Place.
  • Pall Mall.
  • Cockspur Street.
  • Trafalgar Square.
  • Whitehall.
  • Parliament Square.
  • Shaftesbury Avenue.
  • Haymarket.
  • The Strand.
  • Millbank.
  • Victoria Street.

Piccadilly eastbound will be being closed from the underpass and Berkeley Square for the parade preparation.

The parade continues until 5pm, all roads will then reopen at 6pm.

Westminster

Whitehall

Horse Guards Avenue will be closed until Monday, January 2

Horse Guards Avenue will be closed until Monday January 2 between Victoria Embankment and Whitehall Court for event preparation and breakdown.

Matthew Parker Street

Matthew Parker Street will be closed until Sunday, January 1

Matthew Parker Street will be closed until Sunday January 1, to facilitate the setup and breakdown of an event.

Connaught Place

Building works will continue until 2020

The A5, Edgware road will be closed in all directions at the junction of Bryanston Street.

Various restrictions may be in place to facilitate building works.

Motorists should be aware that restrictions will be in place until December 2020.

Hammersmith

Motorists should expect delays on Hammersmith bridge.

The A306 at the bridge has a new weight limit imposed. Due to safety reasons, only one bus can cross the bridge at a time.

Works will continue until Sunday December 31 2017.

Hounslow

Vicarage Farm Road is closed at the junction of Great West Road in Hounslow to facilitate works.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays in the area, with temporary traffic lights on Great West Road also in operation at the junction.

The works will be in place until January 21.

Hanwell

Expect delays on the A4020 Uxbridge Road in all directions at the junction of Boston Road in Hanwell due to works facilitating a major borough street scheme.

Transport for London (TfL) warns of delays until September 1 2017.

Chiswick

TfL continue to warn of possible delays in both directions on the A406 Gunnersbury Avenue at the junction of Power Road in Chiswick .

It is due to the closure of Power Road for continuing bridge replacement works.

Works began in June this year and be completed on Thursday January 4.

Hyde Park

Motorists are being warned to expect large numbers of pedestrians in the Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch and Park Lane areas due to the park's Winter Wonderland event.

The event is open from 10am until 10pm daily and some internal roads within the park will be closed or for event access only.

Knightsbridge

Work continues until April 2019 during the redevelopment of 55 to 91 Knightsbridge .

It is affecting the A4 in Knightsbridge in both directions between Wilton Place and William Street and the westbound bus lane is closed.

Motorists should expect delays in the area.

Green Park

Constitution Hill, Spur Road and Link Road within St James' Park are closed to facilitate an event.

The Mall is also closed at Marlborough Road.

Motorists are advised that Birdcage Walk is closed eastbound, but open westbound at Buckingham Gate.

The roads will remain closed until Tuesday February 28.
