A new memorial remembering Westminster City Council workers who fought and died in the First World War has been unveiled.

The striking design is made up of 82 individual shards each representing one of the fallen members of staff who lost their lives during the 1914 to 1918 conflict.

It stands next to Westminster City Hall, at the south end of Kings Gate Place next to Victoria Street.

The sculpture was created in response to the council’s original Roll of Honour plaque being lost when it moved offices “many decades ago”.

The names of the fallen are written around the base of the sculpture

Through council archives and studying high quality images of the original Roll of Honour, each name was traced and is placed on the new commemoration.

The unveiling ceremony on Thursday (December 8) mirrors the service held nearly a century ago for the original Roll of Honour, with the Dean of Westminster, councillors and council officers all present just as they were in 1921 to mark this new commemoration.

The Lord Mayor of Westminster Cllr Steve Summers said: “In replacing the original Roll of Honour, this memorial recognises the heroism of ordinary people going about their daily lives who responded to the call to fight for our values and beliefs.

The memorial is situated near Westminster City Hall and replaces its orignal Roll of Honour which was lost many years ago

“They went on to do extraordinary feats in the war to end all wars and made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Their commitment to doing their duty has ensured we are able to enjoy the freedoms we do today, and we shall not forget them.”

Children from nearby Burdett Coutts and St Gabriel’s Schools also took part in the ceremony.

Pupils played the Last Post and read out the epitaphs they wrote to Private Ernest Boots, a road sweeper who fought and died at the Somme in 1915.

The memorial, which consists of 82 shards to represent the 82 Westminster City Council staff that lost their lives in the Great War, is blessed

Eleven councillors also served during the war.
