The news that Hayes town is set to get a brand new Lidl store in 2017 has split opinion amongst getwestlondon readers with some excited about the prospect of a discount supermarket, while others are more sceptical.

On Tuesday (December 6), Lidl announced construction work on the new store will start in Spring next year and work on clearing the dumped waste would mark the beginning of the project.

The shop will be built on the former site of the Hayes Swimming Pool in Botwell Lane, just a short walk from Hayes Town.

There is another Lidl store just more than a mile away in Uxbridge Road and this has given some readers cause for doubt.

Marc Davis raised this point on Facebook after reading the story, as did Ryan James Evans and Hayley Elaine Clark.

Lena Lizabeth also suggested that instead of another Lidl, a Primark or rival discount supermarket Aldi would be more welcome.

The Hayes Town Lidl will feature an in-store bakery and customer toilets

Traffic appears to be another concern of getwestlondon readers as Ayesha Plahe said congestion is already a problem in the area.

Lauren North said parking is a problem in Hayes Town.

However, some were in support of developing on the land.

Yvette Papps welcomed the news that Lidl would be clearing the rubbish dumped on the land by travellers earlier this year.

The company was delayed in removing the waste while they sought expert advice but the chain are planning to clear the site soon.

Pippa Wheeler was also slightly ecstatic at the news that Lidl would be coming to the centre of Hayes.

The store is due to open by the end of the next year and will be a "Lidl of the Future", with a glass facade, in-store bakery, longer tills and toilets.

The regional head of property for the company, Shane O'Farrell, said: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission, and look forward to getting started on construction.

“I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”

Hillingdon Council has given planning permission to the store which Lidl plan to open by the end of next year.

There had been a delay in clearing the rubbish from the site while expert advice was sought but work on removing the waste can now begin.

A statement from Lidl said: “We were incredibly concerned to hear about the issues at our site in Hayes.

“As soon as we were made aware we started legal proceedings and successfully got the travellers evicted.

“We are now working to ensure the land is cleared and would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding during this process.”

There is currently a Lidl store in Uxbridge Road near Yeading Lane and also one in Southall High Street.
