Hundreds of new energy efficient "heritage-style" lampposts will be rolled out to improve safety on the streets of Hounslow.

Proposals were given the green light for 400 street lights to be installed across the borough in response to feedback from a consultation with residents.

The heritage street lighting programme is under way with new lamp columns - DW Windsor columns - being obtained by the council's contractor Hounslow Highways.

They are due to be installed in the late summer.

The design is in keeping with maintaining the character of the borough’s historic areas while providing improved safety to pedestrians and motorists.

The decision was approved at the Hounslow council cabinet meeting last Tuesday (March 21).

The modern robust versions are expected to last another 20 years and are almost "like for like" with the existing design which will see most lampposts upgraded.

Unique Column, Half Acre, Brentford - These columns will be refurbished in situ and LED luminaires installed.

However some listed and historical lamp columns along Strand on the Green, Chiswick and Half Acre, Brentford will not be part of the upgrade.

These columns will instead be refurbished, treated, and painted with a suitable heritage paint.

Using new LED light bulbs, the amount of lighting has been selected to be as close to natural light as possible and will operate using real-time information.

This means lighting levels can be adjusted remotely and any fault with the street lights will automatically be flagged up in the new system, removing the need to report any issues.

Councillor Amrit Mann, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment at Hounslow Council, said: “Since the start of their contract, Hounslow Highways has replaced the majority of street lamps across the borough, while we considered the best option for the existing heritage-style columns.

“The decision to go ahead with the upgrade will mean that historic and conservation areas will retain their current look and feel, but we will get improved lighting and more robust assets that will not need to be replaced for at least another 20 years.”
