Steeped in history, Fuller's Brewery calls Chiswick its home, a part of the capital which has been brewing beer for around 400 years.

Hundreds of years on from the first pint, beer is still on the menu in this little corner of Hounslow as this well known brewer unveils its biggest beer launch in a generation.

Formally founded in 1845, Fuller's Brewery is celebrating the launch of their London Pride Unfiltered beer which is 4.1% in strength and offers a modern twist on the classic and much loved tipple, London Pride.

Fuller's has over 50 beers, ales, stouts and ciders

The beer was launched on February 23 at Craft Beer Rising, in London’s former Truman Brewery and comes in 30 litre kegs.

That would certainly keep you going for a while!

It is the first time since the launch of London Pride in 1959, that the name and recipe has been used to create a different interpretation on the beer, offering a modern taste for a younger market.

As Fuller's managing director, Simon Dodd says: “London Pride on cask is a truly great beer and cask ale is and always will be the backbone of Fuller’s beer range.

London Pride Unfiltered is, as the name suggests, is not filtered or pasteurised

"However, the recent investment we have made in brands like Frontier Craft Lager have proved that Fuller’s has relevance to different consumers and different drinking occasions and that we can compete in today’s dynamic beer arena with our own range of very drinkable beers.

“The London Pride brand name has heritage and authenticity and we now feel the time has come to leverage these qualities and bring London Pride to a more contemporary environment.

What is the difference in the brewing process?

London Pride Unfiltered is brewed with the original London Pride recipe.

The difference is that the unfiltered version is dry hopped with Target Hops for added character and flavour.

And if you are reading this thinking what hops are, they are the flowers of the plant Humulus lupulus, used as a flavouring agent in beer.

To keep the beer as natural as possible, it is then centrifuged, which separates the substances, and to retain taste, it is not filtered or pasteurised.

Mr Dodd says: "Our excellent brewing team has taken the same great recipe and, by dry hopping the beer at the end, created a beer, in keg, that has balance, flavour and is true to the character of any Fuller’s beer.”

What does it taste like?

According to Fuller's, the result is a hazy, hoppy tasting beer which is served at 4-6 degrees, cooler than the average of around 7-11 degrees for ale.

This cooler temperature is designed to appeal to the younger consumer.

Head brewer Georgina Young said: “Like London Pride, it still tastes great when you are on your third pint – and its creating this balance that takes real skill.

"By only using a centrifuge, we get a hazy beer but retain additional flavour, to give London Pride Unfiltered more of the traditional character that you have in the cask beer than in the conventional London Pride keg version.

“I’m sure that even those with the hoppiest of taste buds will appreciate such a beautifully smooth and tasty addition to their repertoire.”
