People in Westminster are among the most sporty in the country according to new figures.

The latests Sport England Active People survey showed 44% of its residents do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity sport every week, placing the borough in the top 20 of more than 300 local authority areas across England.

Cllr Steve Summers, cabinet member for sports and leisure at Westminster said: “Westminster residents are among the most active in the country and this hasn’t happened by accident.

"More people take part in physical activity when more, better quality, and often free facilities are provided by the council.

“Every year, Westminster hosts major sporting events such as the London Marathon, the Ride London cycling event and our very own Westminster Mile.

"Residents have the chance to take part in major international sporting events right on their doorstep, and for many, seeing the world’s best in action spurs them to take up sport themselves.”

The council encourages residents to be more active in everyday life, such as walking more often or exercising at home.

Free activities are also available at Paddington Recreation Ground through the council’s ParkMaker personal trainers and volunteers.

Earlier this year, a report suggested people in Fulham 'were the least active gym users in the UK' despite working out more than once a week.

Westminster residents can find out more about sport and leisure opportunities available to them by visiting their local leisure centre or visiting the council website .
