Pupils in Ealing have been ranked 10th in the country in terms of progress, new government figures suggest.

According to the Department for Education (DfE), state-funded schools in the borough had a Progress 8 score of 0.28, which compares pupils' achievement with all pupils nationally at the end of Key Stage 4.

The figures from 2015/16, which ranks Ealing in 10th place out of 151 local authorities nationally, is above the London average of 0.16.

Labour Cllr Binda Rai, cabinet member for children and young people at Ealing Council, said: "Congratulations to our schools and their students, the results really do demonstrate the hard work that goes on.

"Ealing schools are committed to providing the best possible educational experience for all our children, with strong support from the council’s School Effectiveness Service.

"I am very proud of the high results they deliver. This is testament to the strong collaboration we have in Ealing with the primary aim of doing the very best we can for all our children and young people."

A Progress 8 score measures the progress pupils make from the end of Key Stage 2 to the end of Key Stage 4, compared with all pupils nationally who had a similar starting point at the end of primary school.

It means pupils in each local authority are assessed across eight qualifications and given a score, compared to the national average which is set at 0.

Pupils' results are recorded using an Attainment 8 score, which then forecasts how well a student may do in future.

A Progress 8 score is then given based upon the predicted Attainment 8 score in comparison to their actual Attainment 8 score.

For example, a pupil who achieves Grade B after being predicted a C will have a positive score, but a pupil who achieves a Grade B after being predicted an A would have a negative score.

Pupils also achieved above the national average, of 63%, for A* to C grade in English and maths with 65%, up 1% from the year before.
