A new initiative to get 9,000 households recycling has been launched.

The Hammersmith and Fulham Estates Recycling is a challenge running until March 31 giving residents the opportunity to earn money for local charities and themselves by recycling more.

The borough will be split into four communities - Hammersmith North, Hammersmith South, Fulham North and Fulham South. They will compete to which community can recycle the most, with the winners receiving £500 to donate to a local charity project of their choice.

Individuals taking part can also win £200 in a prize draw, while the resident that earns the most points - through their recycling and reporting environmental issues - can pick up £200.

It has been organised by Local Green Points which provides a range of services to local authorities that encourage waste reduction, recycling and reuse.

Managing director Graham Simmonds said: “Recycling on purpose-built estates is generally more difficult than kerbside properties, and we know from our other recycling schemes in London and across the country that residents respond well to inter-community competition particularly when this is combined with personal rewards for top recyclers.”
