Neighbours have described their horror at the death of a man following a knife fight in a quiet Fulham street last night.

Police found two men with stab wounds after they were called to a two-storey terraced house in Stephendale Road just after 6:30pm yesterday evening (October 16).

They took the pair to separate London hospitals in ambulances but one of them, a 49-year-old, died in hospital 12 hours later at around 6:30 this morning.

A woman, who lives in the road and asked not to be named, said: “The first thing I heard was all the flashing lights outside my window. I saw they were trying to resuscitate him. I didn’t know him but he used to sit outside his front door all day drinking.

“One Sunday he had his radio on really loud all day. And just recently I noticed lots of people coming and going. It is such a shame.”

Another neighbour, who has lived in the road for 15 years, said: “I can’t believe it happened in this street. We were sitting in the front sitting room and we didn’t hear a thing. This road is usually so quiet.”

The second man involved in the fight was discharged from hospital this morning and has been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to a central London police station where he remains in custody.

A murder investigation has been launched and an incident room has been opened up at Belgravia Police Station, while a blue police tent has been set up outside the house.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh, of the homicide and major crime command unit, said: "This was a dispute between two men who were known to each other. At this time, we are not looking for any other suspect.??

"I am appealing for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious at around 6:00 or shortly after on Wednesday evening in Stephendale Road to contact the incident room. In particular, I want to hear from anyone who saw two white men arguing."

Any witnesses or anyone with information that may assist the investigation should call the incident room on  020 7321 7228 , or call Crimestoppers anonymously on  0800 555 111 .
