English Defence League (EDL) demonstrators were met with cries of "Nazi scum, off our streets!" as they gathered in central London on Saturday (June 24)

Around 50 supporters made their way from a pub in Trafalgar Square to Victoria Embankment where they were met by a counter-demonstration by anti-fascist groups, including Unite Against Fascism (UAF).

The voices of the far-right were drowned out by anti-fascist chants when their demonstrations met, separated by police officers by around 50 metres.

On Friday (June 23), Scotland Yard said it was taking action under public order laws over the marches .

Superintendent Emma Richards said: "We have made the decision to impose conditions based on current tensions and concerns, information about the intentions of the organisers of these events and intelligence from previous marches held by similar groups."

Around 50 EDL supporters took part in the rally

These restrictions meant that the EDL march was only allowed to legally take place for 90 minutes from 1pm.

The counter-demonstration was allowed to take place on the Victoria Embankment between 12.30pm and 3pm.

One man was detained by officers during the march.
