The Natural History Museum has issued a statement regarding a "a serious incident" after a car mounted the pavement outside the museum , injuring several people.

The incident happened outside the South Kensington museum at around 2pm on Saturday (October 7).

Staff at the museum posted a message on Twitter at 3.06pm, which said: "There’s been a serious incident outside the museum.

"We are working with @metpoliceuk and will provide an update when we have more information."

The tweet was in relation to an incident involving a car that hit several pedestrians in Exhibition Road.

The Metropolitan Police were called to the incident at 2.21pm and detained a man at the scene.

Emergency services attended the scene to treat the injured pedestrians.

Scotland Yard confirmed that "a number if pedestrians have been injured."

Police said they are keeping an open mind as to whether the incident was terror related.
