New figures show Kensington and Chelsea is the noise nuisance capital of London.

More complaints per residents were made in the borough in 2016 than any other in the city, new figures reveal.

Completing the top three are Westminster and Hammersmith and Fulham boroughs.

The figures, obtained by noise monitoring experts Cirrus Research via Freedom of Information requests of all 33 London boroughs, also reveal the top complaints in each borough.

Kensington and Chelsea notched up 13,790 complaints in 2016, meaning there were approximately 87.4 complaints per every 1,000 residents.

Top of the gripes in the Royal borough was noise caused by music, construction and buskers .

The total number of complaints in Westminster topped Kensington and Chelsea, but equated to approximately 69.8 per 1,000 residents.

Complaints in Hammersmith and Fulham came in at 8,963 - around 50 complaints per 1,000.

At the other end of the noise scale, the quietest was south east London’s Lewisham with just a tiny 458 complaints logged or 1.5 per 1,000 across the year.

In west London, Hounslow came bottom of the list, with just five complaints made per 1,000 residents.

The data is being used by the Cirrus Research team to build up a national noise nuisance map of the UK.

Marketing manager James Tingay said: “We conducted our research based on complaints per 1,000 population to get a more accurate picture but even taking this into account we were pretty shocked to see places such as Chelsea and Kensington, Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham and Islington topping the chart.

“It could be down to the amount of construction that is taking place in these sought-after areas, or simply the residents there are just not prepared to put up with noise nuisance.

“They have a duty to investigate each allegation, see if there is any substance, gather evidence and then take action. What one person thinks is acceptable could drive someone else crazy so noise enforcement teams have a difficult job at the best of times.”

Across the capital more than 143,000 noise complaints were logged in 2016.

Music was one of the top gripes in west London, appearing in the top three complaints for Brent, Hillingdon, Ealing, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham,

Other complaints included shouting (Hounslow, Ealing), and construction (Brent, Hillingdon, Ealing, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster).
