Hailed as Kilburn's "last late night venue", The Good Ship in Kilburn High Road has announced its closure to the dismay of comedy and live music lovers across London.

A keen promoter of new music, acts including Adele, The xx and Kate Nash cut their teeth there.

The venue's closure, announced on Monday September 4, will see another live music spot disappear from the capital's nightlife.

Comic acts who have performed at the venue include Sara Pascoe, Rob Deeing and Tony Law.

In a message on Twitter, the Good Ship said: "Sorry to say that The Good Ship is closing for good on 29th October. Please help us to go out with a bang starting with the comedy tonight.x"

Adele has previously played at the venue

In a longer post on Facebook, the venue said: "Dear everyone, I am sorry to inform that The Good Ship will be pulling into dock for good on the 29th October.

"Our last comedy show will be Monday 23rd October and the last gig will be The Smyths on the 29th. (They did the first gig, it's fitting that they do the last.)

"It's a long story but the short version is that the business is no longer viable since we had our hours cut at the end of 2016.

"We have a reasonably full programme between now and then so please do help us to go out with a bang starting with Geoff Norcott headling the comedy tonight."

The Good Ship had its late night licence reviewed by Brent Council in November 2016 after the police raised concerns about the number of incidents occurring after 2am in and around the venue, as well as the security that the bar had in place.

The local authority allowed the bar to keep its license following owner John McCooke's objections that it makes most of its money late on a Friday and Saturday night and that an earlier closing would make the business unviable.

Following the review The Good Ship voluntarily reduced its closing time to 3am in response to the incidents.

Many replied on Twitter with tributes to the venue.

Esper Scout said: "All the best. Of the 9 London venues we've played it's in our top 3 for various reasons, incl. considerations for accessibility/inclusivity."

Another tweet from Natasha Shallice asked if there was "anything we can do to keep it open."

Another tribute claimed it did the "best NYE events".

Cllr Tom Miller, Brent Council’s cabinet member for stronger communities, said: "The Good Ship has made a huge contribution both to the cultural make-up and the night-time economy of Kilburn, so this is very disappointing news.

“As a visitor myself in the past, I know the Good Ship is a much-loved pub with a deserved reputation as a great place to catch live music, but clearly things took a bad turn there a year or so ago with a spate of violent attacks and action was needed.

“The good news is that since then, the pub has really got to grips with these issues and could even now apply for its opening hours to be extended again, which would take around six weeks.

“That would be a step that could really help the Good Ship sail on."
