Ruth Cadbury has become the latest MP to back Sadiq Khan as Labour candidate for London mayor.

The Brentford & Isleworth MP said her party colleague's opposition to a third runway at Heathrow had helped persuade her he was the right man to replace Boris Johnson.

She is the 15th Labour MP in London to plump for the Tooting MP, meaning he now has the support of a third of the capital's 45 Labour representatives in the Commons.

Announcing her decision via Facebook on Sunday (August 16), as the Labour Party sent out its ballots to members, she wrote: "Labour voters have a great selection of candidates for the mayoral nomination but I'll be voting for Sadiq Khan.

"It's a close decision but Sadiq's principled stance opposing a third runway at Heathrow and his staunch support for NHS workers in London, and for the London Living Wage has swung it for me."

Mr Khan is one of six Labour members on the shortlist to represent the party at the London mayoral election in May next year.

The other shortlisted candidates are Dame Tessa Jowell, Diane Abbott, Gareth Thomas, Christian Wolmar and David Lammy.

Mr Khan already has the backing of Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter, Westminster North MP Karen Buck, Brent Central MP Dawn Butler, and Brent North MP Barry Gardiner, among others.

The Airports Commission earlier this year recommended a third runway should be built at Heathrow, but the Government has yet to respond to the commission's report in detail.

Boris Johnson, who is stepping down as London mayor next year after being elected to parliament, has been a staunch opponent of expansion at the airport.
