Motorists have been warned as a major road is to be shut for repair works.

The project will see the closure of Staples Corner Flyover across three weekends in September.

The busy section of the road is just north of Neasden , and close to both Wembley Stadium and Brent Cross shopping centre.

The North Circular will be closed as Transport for London (TfL) carries out refurbishments.

Suggested route of travel during Staples Corner closures

A 40 strong workforce will be replacing two 22-metre long steel expansion joints, which allow the flyover to cope with temperature change.

In addition to the three weekend closures, preparation and resurfacing work will also affect traffic on the flyover.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “We’re sorry for the disruption this vital refurbishment of the Staples Corner Flyover will cause.

"We will be working as fast as we can to replace the expansion joints, which is essential to extend the life span of the flyover.

"During the closures road users in the area should allow more time for their journeys and, where possible, consider alternative routes.”

Staples Corner affected routes

A TfL spokesman said: "TfL considered every alternative to the full closure of the flyover, however to do this work using part-closures would have taken nearly 50 days and would have affected many more road users.

"TfL has a number of measures in place to help reduce the impact of the closure, including rapid response units placed around the area on standby to clear any incidents or accidents on surrounding roads, messaging advising drivers of the closures, re-phasing of traffic signals in the area to reduce disruption as much as possible and ease displaced traffic and cancellation of any non-urgent roadworks in the local area.

When will the closures be?

The flyover will be fully closed in both directions between the following times:

  • 10pm Friday 1 September to 5am Monday 4 September.
  • 10pm Friday 8 September to 5am Monday 11 September.
  • 12.01am to 1159pm Sunday 17 September.

In addition to the three full weekend closures, preparation and resurfacing work will also affect traffic at other times:

  • The flyover will be reduced to one lane in each direction for four consecutive nights between 10pm and 5am from Monday 28 August.
  • The flyover will be closed eastbound from 10pm Monday 18 September to 5am Tuesday 19 September, and westbound from 10pm Tuesday 19 September to 5am Wednesday 20 September.

Buses in the area will be delayed, diverted, reduced or terminate early. Affected routes include:

  • 32 (diverted via the A5 when the flyover is fully closed, and won't serve Staples Corner)
  • 112
  • 142
  • 182
  • 232
  • 266
