Controversial parking measures will be introduced in the Kent Gardens area within two months, Ealing Council has confirmed.

Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) are to be in operation for two hours a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Clivedon Court, Hardwick Green, Malvern Way, Middlefielde, Oak Dene and Roseacre Close will be omitted after the majority of residents in these roads voted against plans.

Roads where the majority voted in favour will get a CPZ, however the council said a small number will miss out due to a restructure.

A council spokesman said: "The council intends to introduce a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) in the Kent Gardens area in order to improve parking conditions and address residents’ concerns.

"The decision was made following an extensive consultation process with local people.

"The CPZ will provide dedicated parking for residents and help alleviate traffic and safety concerns.

"It will also provide a substantial number of shared-use parking bays to help manage demand from commuters, local schools and local businesses.

"The council has now written to residents involved in the consultation.

"We have taken a common sense approach, so where streets on the edge of the CPZ were against the plans they were excluded, but it would be confusing for everyone if we introduced a patchwork CPZ with some streets in the middle of the zone having different parking restrictions."

Opinion is split on the introduction of CPZs near Pitshanger Lane

The spokesman said a total of 349 people made representations during the statutory consultation, but the council would not disclose to getwestlondon how many of these were positive or negative.

It follows a bitter dispute regarding the potential impact the CPZs could have on nearby Pitshanger Lane, voted London's Best High Street in 2015 .

Businesses in the lane fear the CPZs will move commuter parking from the Kent Gardens area into the high street and surrounding roads.

Estate agent John Martin, who opened John Martin Estates more than 20 years ago, said he was disappointed businesses in the street were not consulted.

He added: "From day one this has been a shambolic way of dealing with things.

"If people can't park within an area then we lose.

"They (the council) are going to drive all our customers to supermarkets.

"I'm disappointed with the council and the whole way this consultation has been conducted."

The council had previously conducted a consultation in the Kent Gardens area which resulted in a 50/50 split, 121 for and 121 against.

Residents were told the council would not advance without a majority, but it changed its policy midway through the vote allowing it to press ahead with an even vote.

It followed an informal consultation conducted by residents in 2015, which the council said resulted in an 88% vote in favour.

Some residents have welcomed the move, arguing that the CPZs are necessary and will serve to boost footfall in Pitshanger Lane.

Howard Levy, who has lived in Castlebar Park for more than 13 years, said: "It is good news, the issue that a lot of residents have is one of not being able to get out of their drive.

"So there are a lot of people that have had a real headache over the past few years."

He added the measures would benefit Pitshanger Lane because he believes it will "increase footfall because there will be more spaces to park."
