A mother whose son was thrown into the air in a crash in Hounslow has spoken of his "miraculous" survival as she called for new safety measures.

Hina Malik's 13-year-old son Riyan was involved in a collision with a car in High Street, Cranford, on Sunday (July 3), with one woman saying the force of the impact was so great he span at least twice through the air before landing.

Ms Malik said medics had told her it was a miracle he had survived, suffering only superficial injuries including a swollen shoulder and numerous cuts and bruises.

'I'm thanking God he's still with us'

She said: "He was coming back from having his hair cut and he says 'all I know is I flew through the air, I was scared and I closed my eyes'.

"When the ambulance was called they thought it was a fatality, and when the scans and x-rays showed no internal injuries they couldn't believe it. The medical staff said it was a miracle he'd survived.

"I'm just glad my child's alive. Today (Wednesday July 6) is Eid so I'm thanking God that he's got a new life and he's still with us."

Ms Malik, who stood unsuccessfully for a place on Hounslow Council earlier this year, told getwestlondon the incident highlighted the need for a pedestrian crossing at the location.

'Child killed in previous collision in same road'

She said scores of students cross the road each day on their way to and from Cranford Community College, and there had been collisions on the road in the past, including one in which a child had died.

"We really need a proper crossing because this isn't the first accident at the site," she said.

"A lot of children cross the road there on their way to Cranford Community College and a child lost his life before.

"We need to do something before someone else is seriously injured or killed."

She added that she planned to start a petition in the coming days for a new crossing to be installed.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a collision, driving with no insurance and not driving in accordance with his licence. He has been bailed to return on a date in mid July.
