More than 120 new homes are set to be built on the former Cumberland Hotel site in Harrow .

Origin Housing have received planning permission for two flagship new developments in the London Borough of Harrow, including a scheme of 116 homes at Townsend and Eaton House, South Harrow, and 121 apartments with commercial space on the site of the former Cumberland Hotel, central Harrow.

The new schemes form part of the housing association’s programme to deliver over 500 new homes for Harrow over the next five years, a minimum 40% of which they say will be affordable.

Gareth Jones, development director of Origin Housing, said: “These schemes and our growing development pipeline position makes Origin a significant developer within the London Borough of Harrow – and certainly one of the larger providers of affordable housing.

“We have taken a collaborative approach, working with the council and local communities throughout, to help the borough deliverer on its ambitious housing and growth targets.”

Planning permission was received on December 16 last year for Townsend and Eaton Houses on Northolt Road, using the underutilised site in South Harrow to create 116 apartments.

Designed by Moss Architects, the stepped building will reportedly feature straight clean lines and inset glass balconies.

Sitting within the Mayor of London’s ‘Heart of Harrow’ Housing Zone, adjacent to a newly created public piazza, the Cumberland Hotel site will comprise two buildings of six and nine storeys.

Also designed by Moss, and with a similar architectural language to Northolt Road, Cumberland will offer a large number of dual aspect homes with public and private amenity spaces.

The site will include a public route from Sheepcote Road to the proposed new public space.

Origin Housing say there is scope for subsequent phases, including the restoration of a community hall and the development of a further 50 apartments.

Cllr Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for business, planning and regeneration, said: “We greatly value our partnership with Origin Housing.

“Their confidence in the borough is reflected in a rapidly growing portfolio of new housing schemes, particularly within the Heart of Harrow Housing Zone.

“Origin have a passion for the delivery of genuinely affordable, social rented housing which matches our own commitment perfectly.

“They also share our broader placemaking and regeneration goals and we look forward to continuing to work alongside them on our £1.75Bn regeneration programme.”

Construction on Eaton House and the first phase of Cumberland Hotel is scheduled to start in mid 2016 with both projects having an estimated build programme of two years.
