A new road sign in Hayes has had residents taking a second look as they pass by... because it's spelt wrong!

The sign, in North Hyde Road, spelt nearby town Hounslow as 'Hownslow' causing giggles and jokes from passersby.

The mistake had locals joking about how some of the other local towns could be misspelt, including 'Haze' for Hayes, 'Ryezlip Manna' instead of Ruislip Manor and 'Howrow' in place of Harrow.

The new sign was erected on Wednesday (May 13) outside the new Asda supermarket on the Westlands Industrial Estate.

Twitter users spotted the mistake and informed Hillingdon Council of the error, while a photo of the sign - taken by Anna-Marie O'Donnoghue - was shared and retweeted on social media.

A council spokesman said the local authority did not erect the sign but that it had notified the Dutch company, which was responsible for it.
