The widow of film director Michael Winner was hit over the head with an iron bar after her London home was raided over the weekend.

Geraldine Winner, 77, was in a stable condition at a west London hospital before returning to her £4m home on Saturday (October 10).

A man and woman broke into her home and assaulted her during what was described by the police as a "three-hour raid".

The robbery took place at Mrs Winner’s fourth-floor apartment, which is protected by 24-hour CCTV and security.

'Number of items' taken in aggravated burglary

Police officers were called to the area at around 2am on Saturday after an aggravated burglary was reported.

A police spokesman said that two suspects forced their way into the home of a woman, aged in her 70s, and assaulted her.

“It is believed the suspects left between 1am and 2am on October 10," the spokesman added. "The woman was taken to a west London hospital by ambulance and is in a stable condition.”

Helicopters were used to try and search for the man and woman, but no arrests have been made as yet.

Police suspect Mrs Winner, who acquired £20m following the death of her husband, was specifically targeted.

Mr Winner died of liver disease aged 77 at his home, in Kensington, in January 2013 and made over 30 films during his career.
