Sadiq Khan is to meet with London Fire Brigade to discuss what additional, specialist fire-fighting equipment might help the brigade handle another fire like Grenfell Tower.

The Mayor of London will be meeting with fire chief Dany Cotton to assess the needs of the brigade given the sharp increase in high-rise buildings in London in recent years.

There are also concerns over post-war tower blocks similar to Grenfell Tower which have undergone various renovations and refurbishments.

The Mayor will also offer his gratitude to the Fire Brigade Commissioner and her team on behalf of all Londoners for their tireless efforts to battle the fatal fire.

The Mayor and the chair of London's Fire Authority, Fiona Twycross, will be asking for an urgent review of the brigade's requirements.

Mr Khan said: "The ferocity of the fire at Grenfell Tower shocked the entire country and the Prime Minister has announced there will be a public inquiry.

"But it is crucial that any lessons are learned and taken on board at as early a stage as possible. This was the largest and most challenging fire we have seen in this country for decades.

“And with so many tall buildings in our city the public need to have confidence that they will be kept safe.

"Nobody can fail to have been inspired by the selfless bravery of the firefighters who risked their lives to save others. I am determined to ensure that they have every specialist resource and support required to face the challenges of the future."

Images of the firefighting efforts after the fire broke out on June 14, showing hoses being used to shoot water on the lower floors of the fire as the upper floors continued to burn, drew criticism on social media.

Members of the public expressed concern that fire fighters weren;t able to tackle the flames further up the tower

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton said: “On the night of the Grenfell Tower fire over 200 firefighters were on the scene, with first crews on the ground in a matter of minutes and they did all that they possibly could to save as many lives as possible.

"This was a major incident, now subject to police investigation and a public inquiry, but as with any significant fire I want to carefully examine our requirements in relation to every aspect and outcome of the incident.”
