A woman who hoped to become a candidate for Mayor of London at the last election has been given a suspended jail sentence electoral fraud.

Dr Tammy Alingham, 76, of Tellson Avenue, SE18 was convicted on Tuesday September 16 at Inner London Court after a jury decided she had submitted nomination papers with hundreds of false signatures.

The court heard how in May 2012 the Metropolitan Police received an allegation of electoral fraud concerning the Greater London Authority (GLA) elections. A handwriting expert studied the papers and concluded that the majority of the 330 nomination signatures submitted by Dr Alingham were false.

The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict this week and the defendant was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

The last Mayoral election was held on May 3 2012 and saw the Conservative incumbent Boris Johnson re-elected.
