A pedestrian who died after a collision with a lorry in Regent Street was a retired barrister, police have revealed.

Samuel Mtepuka was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near Oxford Circus last Wednesday (August 3) evening.

The 86-year-old, of Highgate Road, Camden, was named by police on Wednesday (August 10) evening.

Detectives said he was a British national of Malawian origin, who lived in Switzerland and the UK.

Emergency services, including London's Air Ambulance , were called to the busy shopping thoroughfare, near the junction with Hanover Street, at 8.10pm following reports of a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

Mr Mtepuka was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.48pm.

Lorry driver helping police with enquiries

A post-mortem examination conducted at Westminster public mortuary on Tuesday (August 9) failed to determine a cause of death, and further tests are being carried out.

The lorry driver stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries. He has not been arrested.

Detectives from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit want to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to the crash.
