A patient injured in a fire at a Hounslow mental health unit is in a "stable" condition.

A 23-year-old man was rescued from Lakeside Mental Health Unit , in Twickenham Road, Isleworth , after a blaze broke out on Sunday (July 19) evening.

West London Mental Health Trust , which runs the unit, said a patient was being treated for burns and smoke inhalation at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington and their condition was described as "stable".

The trust said two wards were temporarily evacuated due to the fire, affecting up to 33 patients.

"Damage to the wards was contained and patients were able to return to the wards, or were found beds elsewhere in the trust within hours," added a WLMHT spokeswoman.

Lakeside Mental Health Unit is next door to but separate from West Middlesex Hospital, which was not affected by the fire

"Police and fire inspectors are investigating the cause of the fire, and the trust is reviewing the incident in line with its policies."

London Fire Brigade has said it was called to the two-storey building, which is next door to West Middlesex Hospital, at 4.48pm.

It sent four fire crews, who brought the blaze under control at 6.05pm.

It said firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one man, after 58 patients and staff were evacuated before the brigade arrived.

The LFB said part of a first-floor bedroom at the residential unit had been damaged by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the brigade and the police .
