A patient was rushed to hospital with burns after a fire broke out at a mental health unit in Hounslow.

Nealy 60 people had to be evacuated from the Lakeside Mental Health Unit, next door to West Middlesex Hospital, in Twickenham Road, Isleworth.

London Fire Brigade said it was called to the scene on Sunday (June 19) at 4.48pm and firefighters rescued one 23-year-old man from the unit via a stairwell.

It said 58 patients and staff had been evacuated from the two-storey building before the brigade arrived.

Four crews attended the fire, which caused minor damage to the first floor before being brought under control at 6.05pm.

London Ambulance Service said one person was taken to hospital "as a priority" with burns. His condition is not known at this stage.

West London Mental Health Trust, which runs Lakeside, has said it is reviewing the incident, which is being investigated by the LFB and police.

A spokesman for West Middlesex Hospital said it was not affected by the blaze.

It is not yet known how the fire started.
