A young man who threatened to jump into the river at Kew Bridge has been rescued.

The man, believed to be in his mid-20s, was believed to have become entangled in a ladder which stopped him from falling into the river, police said.

He was detained under the Mental Health Act.

A police spokesman told getwestlondon: "We were called at 9.57pm to reports of a man having fallen from Kew Bridge.

The rescue incident - which involved Chiswick lifeboat crew, fire rescue services and the police - happened at around 10pm on Sunday (August 2).

David Clarke, lifeboat press officer for the RNLI, said: "We were called out to search for reports of a man in the water.

"After an extensive search in the Kew area, the police helicopter was involved in the search and after almost an hour the man was found hiding behind the framework of the navigational lights on the up-river side of Kew Bridge.

"The police tried to get him back off the parapet and that's when the fire brigade rescue team took over.

"The man was lowered into the lifeboat where a police officer took the person in to question."
