Detectives are seeking a man after a "disgraceful racist attack" in which a passenger was allegedly punched in the face on board a train between Paddington and Southall.

Police said the 34-year-old victim was travelling on the 10.15pm Paddington to Newbury service on Sunday May 1, when two men and a woman approached and struck up a conversation with him.

One of the men in the group became aggressive and started making anti-Islamic remarks, before punching him in the face and subsequently leaving the train at Southall.

PC Rachel Parfitt, of British Transport Police (BTP), said: "The victim was left bruised by this disgraceful attack and it is fortunate that he was not more seriously injured.

"This was a racially motivated assault which will have appalled anyone who witnessed it and we need anyone with information to come forward.

"Passengers have the right to expect they will be safe when they travel. We will do everything we can to find the person responsible for this assault."

Police are seeking the man pictured, who they believe may be able to help them with their enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call BTP on 0800 405040, or text 61016, quoting reference 178 of18/5/16. You can also call Crimestoppers, free and anonymously, on 0800 555111.
