A man is fighting for his life after a suspected arson attack in Southall.

The man was rescued from a garage blaze in Cranleigh Gardens, Southall, in the early hours of Monday (April 25) and taken to hospital, where police said he remains in a critical condition.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, and he remains in custody at a west London police station.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene shortly before 1am.

The London Fire Brigade said the man was rescued from a garage after the building collapsed.

It said around 21 firefighters tackled the blaze, which destroyed the single-storey garage.

Four fire engines from Southall, Ealing and Northolt fire stations attended the scene, and the fire was under control by 2.36am.

Police and the fire brigade said the cause of the fire was under investigation, with officers from Ealing leading enquiries.

The London Ambulance Service said it had sent multiple resources, including London's Air Ambulance, to the scene.

It said a patient was taken as a priority to a major trauma centre.

The man's age and the precise nature of his injuries is not known at this stage.

On Friday April 15, 200 people were evacuated from a fire at a Bayswater hotel and three taken to hospital.

This followed two being rescued from a block of Wembley flats after a reported "explosion" turned out to be a gas leak , and firefighters also dealt with a fire at a derelict Ickenham house earlier in the month.
