A man has suffered 'life-threatening' injuries after falling from an escalator in Chelsea this afternoon.

Police, paramedics and the London Ambulance Service were called to Peter Jones in Sloane Square just after 1pm, after a man thought to be in his 20s had fallen.

The Metropolitan Police said he had multiple injuries that were 'life-threatening' and that he had fallen from a height. Enquiries are taking place to determine how the incident happened.

A witness has since described how the incident left shoppers in a state of shock.

London Ambulance Service said the man was treated for head and chest injuries and is at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington.

Peter Jones is run by the John Lewis Partnership and closed early following the incident.
