A nursery in Twickenham has been left damaged after a fire in the early hours of Thursday (May 12).

A man escaped from a flat above Twickenham Park Day Nursery in Cambridge Road, Twickenham, after the fire broke out.

Firefighters were called to the property at 3.21am and the blaze was under control by 4.20am.

Neighbours have spoken of the battle to extinguish the flames, while children were unable to attend on Thursday.

London Fire Brigade said part of the nursery on the ground floor had been damaged, and the man had left his flat before firefighters arrived.

It said the fire was not believed to have been started deliberately.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters from Twickenham, Richmond and Kingston fire stations attended the scene.

On Wednesday (May 11), emergency services carried out a controlled explosion after evacuating an old industrial site in Uxbridge.

The fire brigade issued a safety warning this month after a man was caught on film jumping into the Serpentine.
