Police in Westminster are seriously concerned for the welfare of a man who has disappeared after falling into the River Thames .

An investigation has been launched by the force, who are appealing for witnesses and information.

Police were called to a man in the water near to Westminster Bridge at around 5.45pm on Sunday February 19.

Officers from Westminster Police, a police helicopter, the coastguard and the Met's Marine Support Unit attended the scene, but although the man was briefly seen in the river, he disappeared and is thought to have been swept away by the current.

No body matching the description of the man has been recovered from the river and police have not received reports of any missing people in relation to the incident.

The man is described as being around 6ft tall and of slim build, he is described as a white man with black dyed hair with grey roots and a grey beard.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing a dark coloured coat with two badges on the left panel.
