Police have made an arrest and seized the vehicle from a man on suspicion of causing criminal damage to the ANZAC war graves in Harefield .

The news of the damage to the highly respected graves at St Mary's Church, sent shockwaves through the community and brought a Harefield ward Councillor to tears.

A 29-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, November 25, on suspicion of causing criminal damage. He has been bailed to a date in December.

The graves were found sprayed with blue paint on the morning of Sunday, November 29.

Councillor Jane Palmer tweeted an image of the damage, which she said moved her to tears.

She told getwestlondon : “The ANZAC graves are a very, very big part of Harefield village. It's something they've been brought up with and they've been brought up to respect and when they're desecrated like that people take it very, very seriously.

“The community will come together as a result of it and they're very angry at what's been done. People were coming down to look at it whilst I was there and were obviously, visibly moved by it.”

Rob Bryan, the Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector for North Hillingdon, said: "This is a positive first step in this investigation, but it does not end here.

"I reiterate my request for anyone with information about this crime to come forward. Someone knows the truth of how these gravestones came to be damaged and I urge them to speak up".
