This terrifying looking machete was found under a park bench in Hanworth , close to where a group of youths had congregated.

Police said the weapon was handed in by a member of the public who found it on the Pevensey Road Open Space nature reserve, near to South West Middlesex Crematorium, on Sunday (September 11).

That is just a few hundred metres from where 18-year-old Jamil Palmer was stabbed to death in Crane Park in 2014.

PC Will Lowry, of Feltham neighbourhood police team, said he was glad it had been taken off the streets before it could be used to seriously injure someone.

"This was a nasty thing, which could have caused some serious damage," said the officer, who was on patrol when the knife was handed in.

"I'm glad it's off the streets now and will be destroyed before it can end up inside somebody.

"Around that area there are some real drugs hot spots, and there have been stabbings in Hounslow, including the tragic death of Jamil Palmer in 2014. We don't want a repeat of that."

Other weapons found hidden on Hounslow's streets

The machete was the latest in a number of weapons seized by police after being found around Hounslow.

They include knives found in Feltham Park, along with drugs paraphernalia, and a blade discovered at the junction of Hounslow High Street and Bell Road, close to the Bell Square open air stage.

Knives have also been deposited in the knife bank recently installed outside Hounslow police station in Montague Road, just off Hounslow High Street.

Knives are often hidden in public locations by drug dealers and other criminals who don't want to be caught in possession of them, according to police.

Officers in Hounslow have stepped up weapons sweeps in recent months, as well as stopping and searching more people, as they attempt to stamp out knife crime.
