An overturned lorry and fuel spillage on the M4 has caused severe delays for motorists on Monday (May 23) morning.

The accident has led to the closure of three lanes on the M4 between J4 Heathrow Spur and J4B M25 westbound, with traffic reported to be going back as far as six miles, affecting drivers from Harlington in Hillingdon to Hounslow .

Recovery work is in progress and two people have been treated for minor injuries.

The London Ambulance Service (LAS) said they were called just before 7.15am to an overturned lorry and treated two patients.

A spokesperson for LAS said: "We were called at 7.13am to reports of a road traffic collision involving an overturned lorry on the M4 nr Exit 4B.

“We sent ambulance crews and an incident response officer".

“We treated two patients at the scene for minor injuries but none were taken to hospital”.

One motorist Paul Garlick told getwestlondon he left Putney at 7am and has been in the car for five hours.

The Metropolitan Police has said they were called to reports of an overturned vehicle on the M4 and the incident is damage only.

The incident happened during the early morning commuter rush hour and traffic continues to queue back to J1 on the A4 at Chiswick Roundabout,.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area with travel times expected to be at least around 60 minutes.
