Police have detained a 40-year-old man after a collision on the M4 which forced the motorway to shut in both directions.

The collision occurred near junction 2 of the eastbound carriageway at Brentford, at around 8.02pm on Thursday (August 31).

The motorway was closed in both directions following the crash, causing long tailbacks, when reports emerged of a man running around the road in just his underwear.

Footage posted on twitter showed the man in the middle of the motorway with his trousers around his ankles.

The motorway was reopened at around 9.30pm but delays persisted well into the evening.

No-one was injured in the collision.

Police took the 40-year-old man they had detained to hospital for a medical assessment.
