A car has caught fire in the hard shoulder of the M4 near Heston .

The fire was first reported at around 9.50am and two lanes were closed as traffic was directed around the burning car into the fast lane.

London Fire Brigade is on the scene and drivers have been warned to approach with caution.

The fire broke out between junction three and junction two, eastbound.

Highways England tweeted a picture from a traffic camera that shows thick black smoke billowing from a car parked in the hard shoulder.

London Fire Brigade were called to the M4 eastbound between Junction 3 and 2 near Heston at around 9.36am.

Two fire engines from Hayes and Acton stations attended the scene and the fire was extinguished by 10.01am.

The Metropolitan Police were called at around 9.38am after the car fire broke out, but they did not attend the scene.

Highways Agency traffic officers and London Fire Brigade dealt with the incident.

All lanes have no re-opened after the car fire has reportedly been cleared, but traffic is still congested all the way back to Junction 4 near Heathrow and Uxbridge.

Lanes reportedly reopened at around 10.15am.

The lane closures are causing congestion all the way back to junction 4 at Heathrow and Uxbridge as all traffic is passing the fire in the fast lane.

Highways England say there are delays of just 10 minutes and that normal traffic conditions are expected by 10.45am.

According to Google Maps the fire has broken out between Heston and Osterley on the central London-bound carriageway.

Two out of three lanes on the M4 are currently closed while London Fire Brigade reportedly deal with the blaze.
