Motorists are being advised to plan ahead if travelling from the M25 onto the M40 due to a collision which has closed two lanes.

According to Highways England, there is a "large diesel spillage" on the M40 between junction 1A for the M25 and junction 2 for Beaconsfield.

Lane closures are expected to be in place throughout Tuesday afternoon (December 5).

Delays expected until 9.30pm

Motorway Cameras now says delays are expected until 9.30pm.

Highways England will also be keeping motorists informed on Twitter.

Delays expected until 8.45pm

Originally it was thought traffic and delays would ease by 4.30pm, according to Motorway Cameras.

It now looks as though delays are expected until 8.45pm.

Continue to avoid the area if possible.

Traffic still queuing

According to our traffic system, delays are still building following the accident between two lorries earlier.

There are long delays while recovery work takes place.

Delays until 7.15pm

Delays are now expected until 7.15pm, according to Motorway Cameras

Delays expected until 6.30pm

Normal traffic conditions are now expected between 6.15pm and 6.30pm, according to Motorway Cameras.

Previously, traffic was expected to return to normal by 4.30pm, then 5.30pm.

It’s probably best to avoid the area, if you can.

The estimated time for traffic conditions to return to normal has been pushed back from 4.30pm.

Motorway Cameras is now saying conditions on the road are expected to return to normal between 5.15pm and 5.30pm.

Normal traffic conditions expected from 4.30pm

On their website, Motorway Traffic Cameras say:

There are two of four lanes closed.


Normal traffic conditions are expected between 16:30 and 16:45 on 5 December 2017.
