Heavy goods vehicles are to be banned from parking in Hounslow's streets overnight.

Lorries, buses and trucks weighing five tonnes or more will be prohibited from parking up in residential roads across the borough between 6.30pm and 8am.

Hounslow Council says it is introducing the ban, due to come into effect in April next year, in response to complaints from residents.

It claims the policy will bring it in line with neighbouring authorities and help cut air pollution and congestion caused by goods vehicles, as well as freeing up parking spaces for residents.

Councillor Richard Foote, cabinet member for community protection, said: "It's not fair that Hounslow is being used as a car park by heavy goods vehicle drivers. It's a nuisance for residents.

"This is the right time to bring in the ban, particularly as our neighbours have had bans in place for 40 years."

Mr Foote made what is known as a 'single member decision' - meaning it does not have to go before full council or cabinet - on Wednesday, November 11, to implement the ban.

The council said the idea was first discussed by cabinet members in December 2013 and an extensive consultation was held last year.

It says signs warning long-haul drivers about the new legislation will be put up early next year and the "lion's share" of the costs of implementing the ban are set to be funded by a Transport for London (TfL) grant.
