Labour peer Lord Taylor of Blackburn has died after his mobility scooter collided with a van in Westminster .

He was rushed by the London Air Ambulance to a south London hospital after the incident in Millbank on Wednesday (November 16).

Despite being in a stable condition with injuries not deemed to be life threatening, 88-year-old Lord Taylor died in the early hours of Friday (November 25) morning, the Metropolitan Police confirmed .

The 55-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and enquiries continue however, no arrests have been made at this time.

The life peer was leader of Blackburn council in the 1970s and became a Lord in 1978.

Baroness Smith of Basildon, Labour’s leader in the House of Lords, said: "Tom Taylor had a life long commitment to the Labour Party , through both local government and Parliament, and was held in high regard and with great affection by his party colleagues.

"He was also actively involved for many years in the education and higher education sectors.

"Tom was a committed member of the House of Lords right through to the tragic circumstances which led to his death.

"We in the Labour peers group are very sad and will miss him dearly. And I’m sure many others around Parliament will miss him too."

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision.
