It used to be that you only ran the risk of running into the Gruffalo if you took a walk through the deep dark woods.

That, however, has all changed with the grand opening of the new Gruffalo River Ride Adventure at Chessington World of Adventures .

The lazy river ride replaces the iconic Bubbleworks, and opened to the public at midday on Saturday (March 18).

The ride is based on the bestselling children’s story by Julia Donaldson and includes famous its characters mouse, owl, fox and snake.

Our sister publication GetSurrey was lucky enough to get an sneak preview, and reported the ride to be a picturesque riverboat journey through the deep dark wood filled with woodland creatures.

It includes exciting voice overs from the characters and magically lit areas leaving kids with memories of a great adventure.

There were twists and turns along the way - and be warned - you will get WET!

The star guest at the opening was, of course, the Gruffalo, complete with his knobbly knees, turned out toes and poisonous wart at the end of his nose.

But other famous faces present included former Blue Peter presenter Connie Huq, whose sister is Ealing Central and Acton MP Dr Rupa Huq , JB from JLS , Jenni Falconer, Jodie Kidd, Stacy Soloman, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Jason Flemyng.

There was plenty more Gruffalo fun to be had after the ride too, with a meet-and-greet in the Gruffalo area, exclusive goodies and a chance to watch the film adaptation of the book.

The Bubbleworks ride opened in 1990 before closing in September last year.
