Paramedics from Fulham ambulance station showed Londoners are in safe hands by triumphing at the European EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Championship.

A team representing the London Ambulance Service (LAS) outshone 11 other crews from across the continent in the contest, held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

They fought off competition from Turkish and Danish lifesavers in the final round as they came to the aid of 'patients' injured in a mock canoeing accident.

Judges praised clinical team leader Tim Weekes and paramedics Ryan Parry and Sam Cooper, saying they "solved the very complex case nearly to perfection".

Anne Lippert, main instructor at the championship, said: "Of course nobody wants to be part of a major accident, but I can honestly say after today's LAS performance that if I could choose a place to be traumatised, I definitely wouldn't mind being in a place where I would be treated by the London Ambulance Service. They did a remarkable job all through the competition."

The European EMS Championship was part of the EMS2016 congress, at which more than 1,000 health experts gathered to share their knowledge between May 30 and June 1.

In May, a St John Ambulance volunteer from Ealing was awarded for saving the life of a man injured in a crash in Marylebone Road.
