The mosque where murdered Syrian preacher Abdul Hadi Arwani was once Imam have expressed their deep sadness and condolences at his death.

Mr Arwani was named by local sources on Wednesday as the victim in the Wembley murder on Tuesday (April 7).

An official statement from the Annoor Cultural and Community Centre Trust, in Acton, dated Tuesday said: "Innalilahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon. [To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return].

"We have with great sadness heard of the unfortunate death of Shaykh Abdulhadi Arwani who was the former Imam of the Annoor Cultural and Community Centre who served from 2005 to 2011, he will be sadly missed.

"We send our sympathies and sincere apologies to his family, the Muslim community and friends. May Allah (SWT) forgive him and open the doors of mercy onto him.

"May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdous. May Allah grant his family and the community patience in this difficult time of sadness. Ameen."

The funeral prayer is yet to be announced.

Prayers were held at nearby Acton Mosque following news of his death.

The General Secretary said: "He was Imam at Annoor mosque and then when he left there he used to come and pray here.

"Everybody is sitting there and making prayer and dua [calling out to God]. Everybody is paying tribute to him.

"Of course we feel sorry for him but we do not know him. We only know him to say Salaam Alaykum."

Police launched a murder investigation after discovering a man shot dead in a car in Wembley.

Officers have not officially identified the victim but he has been named locally as Abdul Hadi Arwani.

Known for his opposition of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Abdul was considered an authority on Islamic marriage contracts and divorce law.

Detectives continue to appeal for anyone with any information in connection with the case to get in touch.
