Following a makeover, the Lillie Langtry in West Brompton reopened its doors in early August fresh with a new look.

The pub is placed on Lillie Road, a typically cosy west London street tailor made for the evening sun, and comes fit with a lovely outdoor spot.

Inside it's clear to see that the venue has refurbished in style, with a range of beers spread around the bar and a large collection of colourful paintings making up the wall to the left.

My friend and I kick off the evening with two glasses of Momo 2014 Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, with all the qualities you'd expect from a strong Kiwi wine.

Spit Roasted Pulled Pork Nuggets

For starters, my friend opted for the Spit Roasted Pulled Pork Nuggets (£5.50) while I chose the Char-grilled Octopus (£9).

Both excellent, especially the octopus which is beautifully cooked with a BBQ taste foiling wonderfully with the fish and the presentation, served neatly with a dash of ketchup, deserves praise.

And the nuggets were crispy and flavoursome, served with Chipotle Mayo.

On to our mains and I chose the Pork Jowl (£13) while Joe opted for 45 Day Dry Aged Rib Eye steak (£26).

Served with a dash of ketchup (seems to be popular here), the pork is split into five portions of perfectly cooked meat, blushing in the middle served with wilted baby gem and cauliflower.

Meanwhile the steak, cooked with similar deftness, does taste delicious but does fall a few shades short of its £26 price tag.

To accompany, I has a glass of the Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 from Chile, an excellent red that bodes well with a meat dish.

Following a wonderful set of starters and mains, it did feel as if the desserts were a little short of its so far excellent standard.

My friend opted for a Cherry and Rice Pudding Brulee (£6.50) and I chose the Coconut Pearls, Lemon Curd, Mint Jelly, Salted Oat and Ginger Crumb (£6.50).

By no means poor, but neither felt as if they're quality was in line with our previous treats in food, and I can't help but wonder if a few more additions to its dessert menu could go a long way here.

The verdict

The Lillie Langtry aims to be the "very heart of the local community" and a "return to times when pubs were genuine social neighbourhood hubs."

In an affluent area like West Brompton, it's a breath of fresh air that a pub have aimed for a refurbish and recapture a bit of history, rather than knock it down for flats.

With Victorian character and a gentle, easy feel to the place, I'd recommend coming here - especially while the summer still lasts and you can sit outside.

Did you know?

Lillie Langtry was an American actress and stage producer who was living in London before her death in Monte Carlo in 1929.

She was known, according to the pub, for a "string of affairs" with "well to do gents," including the Prince of Wales in the late 1870s, Edward VII.
