A kayaker who found himself stranded and in trouble in the River Thames over the weekend was rescued from the water by members of Teddington RNLI.

Crews were deployed at 3.03pm on Sunday (March 5), after two kayakers got into trouble on the upstream side of Teddington Weir.

Andy Butterfield, from Teddington RNLI, was at the helm of the rescue boat, accompanied by two other crew members, Jon Chapman and Mark Gibbs.

He said they arrived within minutes of launching to find "a very cold and wet man stranded on the booms feet from the gates of the weir".

Mr Butterfield added: "He had entered the water due to poor conditions with a strong breeze and river flow.

"His friend had been unable to assist as the strong flow would simply have pinned him to the boom as well. Sensibly the friend went to the shore and called 999."

Teddington RNLI were deployed at just after 3pm on March 5

After pulling the man from the water, the crew handed him over to Richmond Police, who escorted him to a waiting ambulance.

The lifeboat then went on to retrieve the stuck kayak to prevent further issues and as the video shows, a second rescue boat was on hand in support at Teddington Weir.

Mr Butterfield added: "Having visited the casualty in the ambulance afterwards we understand that although very cold he will be fine."

The man is believed to be in his late 20s.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We were called at 14:55 to concerns for the safety of a kayaker.

"He was taken to a west London hospital by the London Ambulance Service for a check-up."
