Lidl Shepherd's Bush: New discount store expected to open in shopping centre next year

The store is opening on the Morrisons site in the W12 Shopping Centre in the New Year, and bringing with it up to 40 new jobs

Lidl is opening a new store on the old Morrisons site in Shepherd’s Bush .

Work has begun fitting out the West 12 Shopping Centre unit, after the German discount supermarket exchanged contracts with the mall’s owners, Landsec.

The shop is expected to open at the beginning of 2018 and create up to 40 new jobs, in a development warmly greeted by Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter .

The new store will have a 1,245sqm sales area once the refit is complete and is part of the company’s growth plan over the coming months.

Shane O’Farrell, regional head of property at Lidl UK, said: “We are delighted to be opening a new store in Shepherd’s Bush, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme.

“We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in the near future.”

Lidl is heading to Shepherd's bush

There was shock and dismay when Morrisons shut up shop and left Shepherd’s Bush at the end of last year.

At the time Mr Slaughter called it “terrible news for the W12 area” and the 170 members of staff who worked there, with shoppers also lamenting the closure .

Mr Slaughter was welcomed the arrival of Lidl.

Speaking to getwestlondon from the Labour conference in Brighton, he said: “It’s great news.

"Morrisons decision to pull out was very disappointing.

“There is a need for a supermarket in the W12 Centre in its own right and as an anchor store.

Andy Slaughter said the new supermarket was "great news" for Shepherd's Bush

“So I am delighted that Lidl and the centre owners have worked to achieve the opening.

“It was very clear from my inbox that there is a real demand from residents and I wish the store well.”

The new store on Shepherd’s Bush Green forms part of the company’s £1.45bn expansion plans between 2017 to 2018, which will see the supermarket open between 50 to 60 new stores a year.
