Part of Brentford library will reopen this weekend more than two months after the ceiling collapsed.

The Grade II listed building on Boston Manor Road has been closed since November 10, last year, after the plaster from one of the ceilings in the children's section fell overnight.

A structural engineer was called in and a full investigation carried out.

Hounslow council and Carillon, which manages the borough's libraries, have agreed the library is safe to re-open this Saturday (January 28) following the outcome of a building survey.

However the children's section will remain closed until works are completed with the aim of fully re-opening on March 11.

In the meantime children's material will be available in the adult section of the library.

Councillor Corinna Smart

Councillor Corinna Smart, cabinet member for public health and leisure at Hounslow council, said: “Building surveys carried out at Brentford Library have now been completed and both Hounslow Council and Carillion have agreed that the library can be re-opened on Saturday 28 January 2017.

“The children’s library will remain closed until works have been carried out to repair the ceiling.

“Children’s items will be made available in the adult library whilst the children’s library is closed to the public.

“It is the intention that other necessary remedial works identified by the surveys will be carried out on days that the library is normally closed to prevent further inconvenience to customers, with the aim of the library being fully re-opened on 11 March 2017.

“Carillion and the Council apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents and library users whilst the library was temporarily closed.”
