Traffic remains at a standstill near Lambeth Bridge on Thursday (November 9) evening after an HGV breakdown and fuel spill earlier in the day.

There is huge congestion at Lambeth roundabout and the surrounding roads, including the bridge which stretches over towards Westminster and Horseferry Road.

Transport for London (TfL) are warning motorists that traffic is slow moving and running on diversions.

Buses are also affected by the incident.

The lorry broke down sometime before midday at the roundabout, causing problems and delays, but this was exacerbated by the subsequent oil leak.

TfL says northbound traffic on Albert Embankment is being diverted over Lambeth Bridge resulting in tailbacks from Westminster Bridge, through Parliament Square to Vauxhall Bridge.

Vauxhall Bridge Road is slow southbound with tailbacks to Victoria. Southbound traffic on Millbank is slow from Parliament Square.

Lambeth Bridge is closed eastbound. Police are operating a contraflow through the west side of the roundabout.

TfL has not indicated how long it will take to return the roads to normal.
