Britain went to the polls on Thursday (June 8) for a snap general election called by Prime Minister Theresa May.

But the Conservatives were unable to gain a majority - meaning there will be a hung parliament.

And while most of the results were announced by Friday morning, voters had to wait until 9pm for the outcome in Kensington following recounts .

Labour won a historic and sensational victory in Kensington, with Emma Dent Coad declared the winner after three counts.

She won by the slenderest of margins, just 20 votes, defeating the Conservative incumbent, Lady Victoria Borwick.

Trafalgar Square was "completely cordoned off" in a police incident on Thursday .

Pictures showed armed Met Police officers guarding the cordon, which was in place both ways on the A400 Charing Cross Road between Trafalgar Square and Cranbourn Street.

Met Police said officers were responding to a "suspect package".

Roads were reopened at around 3.40pm.

Man jailed after being stopped on the A40 at Northolt with high purity cocaine

A man found to have 4kg of high purity cocaine after his Range Rover was stopped on the A40 was jailed for three and a half years .

The car, which belonged to an Albanian national, was stopped on the busy A-road near Northolt and found to have four packages of cocaine in the footwell behind the drivers seat on March 30.

The driver, 37-year-old Ilir Durishti may now face deportation having pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply.

Pajtim Kasami celebrates

Former Fulham footballer Pajtim Kasami was involved in a controversial game against AEK Athens, when he was accused of inciting crowd trouble.

Kasami was accused of going over the top in his celebrations and was ordered to pay a fine of 7,000 euros immediately afterwards.

But after further complaints from a fan, the former Fulham man has now been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence as a result.
