Labour leadership candidate Yvette Cooper, who has the backing of both Hounslow's MPs, visited the borough as the race entered its final leg.

Ms Cooper, who is third favourite with bookmakers to be the party's new chief, appeared at the Heston & District Community Association building, in Vicarage Farm Road, Heston, on Tuesday (August 18).

She set our her vision to win back voters after the desperately disappointing general election as she answered questions from the audience.

Brentford & Isleworth MP Ruth Cadbury and Feltham & Heston MP Seema Malhotra were among 59 MPs who nominated Ms Cooper for the contest.

Ms Cadbury said: "I'm supporting Yvette Cooper because not only will she be a great Labour leader, but she's also the best person to be Labour's first woman prime minister.

"I was impressed with Yvette in government; among many achievements she was responsible for setting up Surestart and Future Jobs Fund. In opposition she's successfully squared up to Theresa May.

"She's the only front bench candidate seriously arguing that Labour's spending in government didn't cause the financial crash and that historically Labour has run a surplus four times as often as the Tories have.

"She has a strong, and deliverable, programme to increase childcare, build affordable homes, invest in hi-tech jobs and tackle the shameful levels of child poverty."

Ms Malhotra was not available for comment, but she tweeted after the meeting: "Fantastic Q&A with @YvetteForLabour in #Heston tonight! Thank you."

Following an earlier speech by Ms Cooper last week, Ms Malhotra tweeted: "It's what we need. A leader with credibility - with heart and head - who can win in 2020. Brilliant speech by @YvetteForLabour today."

Ms Cooper is one of four candidates vying to lead the Labour party. The others are Jeremy Corbyn, who is the favourite with bookmakers, Andy Burnham and Liz Kendall.

Ballot papers were sent to party members on August 14 and votes must be received by September 10.
