Labour stalwarts in Hammersmith & Fulham have welcomed news that Sadiq Khan will be the party’s candidate at next year’s London Mayoral elections.

The Tooting MP had been heavily backed by Hammersmith counterpart Andy Slaughter, who said the party had made the right choice. And H&F Council leader Stephen Cowan said Mr Khan will make “a great mayor”.

Mr Khan beat former minister Tessa Jowell in the ballot of London Labour members, announced on Friday (September 11).

“Wow, thank you! I’m overwhelmed. I’m deeply honoured that so many Londoners have put their faith in me today," he said.

“I’m determined to repay your faith by winning the Mayoral election next May and making a real difference to Londoners’ lives."

Mr Slaughter, who had publicly backed Mr Khan, said: “I’m absolutely delighted. The hard work starts now to make sure Labour win the election next year.”

And Mr Cowan added: “Sadiq has got lots of experience, it’s a very positive move for London - he’s London through-and-through.

“I believe he would be an excellent Mayor of London.”

Voting for the party’s new national leader has finished, with the result to be announced on Saturday (September 12).

Both Mr Cowan and Mr Slaughter have backed Yvette Cooper.
